It's all just an act to look tough (without actually being tough).
In some cases it might be true, but most of the people who are heavily tattooed, like myself, don't do it to "look tough". In my case, I started getting tattooed over 20 years ago to display my love of all things evil, dark, heretical, atheistic, occult, pagan, or Halloween or horror based.
We're making a statement to all of the "normal" people out there that we're not all the same. Most of my artwork is Halloween themed, as well as several phrases in Latin that display my atheism. I also have a few occult sigils scattered throughout and band logos for 3 of my favorite metal bands of all time.
Everything I have is in black and grey, with a few spots of white. My back is completely covered by a back piece that took 2 1/2 years to finish. Both of my arms are covered from shoulder to the wrist(not sleeves), along with several on my chest and abdomen.
I have 3 memorial tattoos on my chest, for my mom, my older sister, and for our granddaughter, who was stillborn 6 years ago. Our 4 grandkids are each represented by their own jack-o-lantern with their names copied under each one.
None of my artwork is there to make me look tough, I don't need that. I already look like a serial killer according to family, friends, and co-workers.
Getting tattooed is very expensive and it's painful, but you learn to phase out the pain and concentrate on something else like music.
