So, I just checked to see the situation for LGBT people in Algeria. Given that it’s a Muslim-majority African country, I suspected that trans rights would be practically nonexistent. Short answer: I was right. Even the comparatively mild act of cross-dressing is illegal.

It is honestly a terrible experience for me, a transmasc bisexual. I haven't told anyone but 3 people that I really trust. I'm just waiting for an opportunity to leave and live my life peacefully, here, just cutting your hair short gives you looks. People get killed here for that, there is no safe spaces for lgbtq+ youth, no lgbtq+ therapists, and nobody to support you really. You will feel just lonely, lying to people everyday about yourself and how you feel, not being able to express yourself much… etc. It's so rare to find people like you, so hard to find open-minded people who would accept you even if their beliefs are against it, people who would share their similar experiences with you… etc. You would find good friends then they start making homophobic jokes around you, even tho they dunno about your identity because this type of jokes is very common around younger people, and you feel bad then they start shitting on them with you and you would have to pretend that you agree with them and that gay people suck… etc. And the constant fear of leaving your family and the people you love really haunts you. The fear of having to choose between religion and always being suicidal, or being yourself and happy. You get it now I think, but it really is a struggle, especially for a teenager.
