It's not a matter of "understanding" and to answer the second question - neither. Their position predates the modern euthanasia position by thousands of years.
While I don't have an exact answer, I do think a more accurate summary would be that secularists/atheists have a hard time understanding the value of life as it is understood in a Christian worldview.
I understand that christians only see value when it fits their agenda. Wasn't really all that hard.
