They(we) are recognized as an official religious organization, and are supposed to be given the same rights as any/all of the other christian denominations are.
A few years ago I saw a documentary about American Satanists who gave that impression. They were just liberals who thought it was clever to poke Christians in the eye. The kind of people who think the characters on the Big Bang Show are role models.
Recently however, I've learned that there are active groups of self-described Satanists who are a lot worse. They spread accelerationist and Neo-Nazi ideology on line. Some of them have been around for a long time. There is overlap with Incel groups who blame everyone else for their loser status. Some of them go on line to encourage young people to harm themselves or others. These are bad people.
It looks as though the most recent school shooter --- the young woman who shot up the Christian school -- was influenced by these people. This is just speculation at this point. Nor do I have any idea whether the Satanists who put up the statue at city hall are mixed up with the Neo-Nazi types. I don't know.
Let's just say that if your next door neighbor starts putting Satanist symbols on his front porch, you should proceed with caution.

Even if that means mocking and/or humiliating christianity, judaism, or islam. They apparently can't deal with anyone who won't follow their doctrines, and dares to say otherwise.
The losers who did this are nothing short of cowards.
