It became controversial a few years later once people actually noticed that a hymnal included a song with the refrain
"It's God they ought to crucify
Instead of you and me,
I said to the carpenter
A-hanging on the tree."
It was removed by 1977. Surprisingly, with all the talk about the blasphemous lyrics, very little was focused on the question of how workable it even was as a hymn. Even when I was a Christian, I can't remember the congregation singing a single hymn that had a narrative structure anywhere near this.
