The phrase 'don't shoot the messenger' has its origins in town criers of 17th century Britain. Since the crier's announcements were done in the name whichever blue-blooded wastrel happened to be occupying the throne, harming (sometimes even threatening) a town crier who brought bad news - such as a tax increase or an eviction - was considered an act of treason.
