I think many animals have some level of self-consciousness, as well as a good understanding of how the outer world works, which is in itself an input into consciousness. That we humans assign our own feelings to them is understandable, if shaky at best. After all, we too are only animals analyzing our world.

There are also aspects of animal awareness which are not available to people.
