Religion and politics are inseparable.
Religion tells people how to behave, in detail, having a major impact on society, economy and culture. As long as you have religions with institutions and ranks, the higher ranks want to control the narrative. This does not happen in a vacuum, it happens, out there in the houses, on the streets, markets and town halls.
Politics is the power struggle related to economy, culture and the shape of society as well. Religious and political leaders will always collide in their interests and in struggle for control, sooner or later.
The only times (in Europe) you didnt have major struggles between religion and politics is when one of both was weak enough to put up a serious fight. Before Canossa, and after the papal state turned inwards after failing to take actual control over Italy and assorted regions.
Even in Ancient Egypt, where the Pharaoh was a living god, for the entobing of whom monumental efforts were made without a blink, even the Pharaohs regularly were subject to the will and influence of the priests.
Religion without hierarchy, a "private" belief having no impact or interaction with the world outside the self and thus without struggle with other entities...thats a wet dream ..or lets better say delusion.
