A few from the latest episode of Tor's Cabinet of Wonders:
- There's a patron saint of Autism: Saint Thorlak of Iceland. Not officially (at least the autism part), but apparently, Catholic autism groups are trying to add autism to his domain. I was going to make a point about how it's better than being the patron saint of Iceland, but evidently, given that Iceland's Catholic population has grown rapidly since I was born (4 times if you count percentage of the population, 6 times if you count sheer numbers), at least it's something.
- Narcosaints are a thing: one particularly notable example is Jesus Malverde, who, despite having clearly established birth and death dates, may or may not have existed. Lalo Salamanca from Better Call Saul apparently wears a necklace of him, but I must have missed any scenes where he draws attention to it.
- I know that Latin American Catholicism includes many traditions from the Pre-Columbian civilizations, but I did not know that this extended to turning (for instance) Mayan deities like Maximon into saints.
- There was a saint who could fucking fly: Saint Joseph of Cupertino. I guess The Flying Nun wasn't as random an idea as I thought.
- I was aware that St. Agatha was considered the patron saint of breasts, but I did not know that this veneration went as far as including creating titty cupcakes.
- One story about St. Nicholas that somehow became obscure: Supposedly, he encountered a butcher who decided to turn three kids into ham hocks, and turned them back into living children just by making a sign of the cross over the barrel they were in. Somehow, this legend became obscure, but the image of him with three kids in a tub (insert jokes about pedo priests here) lived on and is apparently why hes the patron saint of children.
- Cephalophore is the term for a saint that carries around its own severed, but still living head. There are something like 120 of them, possibly making up 1% of the total Saint population. On a more secular note, there may be a Cephalophoric version of Johnny 2x4 at around 3:52 in this Ed, Edd, n Eddy video, but, given that Plank is sitting in the place of his normal head, and even far more mundane episodes imply that he might actually be sentient, I don't know.
