Ilhan Omar Attack Sparks MAGA Conspiracy Theories

Omar was sprayed with an unknown liquid by a man wielding a syringe during a Minneapolis town hall on Tuesday. He was restrained by police and booked into county jail for third-degree assault.

Several MAGA figures have said they do not believe the attack was real, with President Donald Trump himself saying: “She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her."

The attack on Omar unfolded amid heightened tensions over federal immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, where two U.S. citizens have been shot dead by federal agents—Renee Good, who was killed on January 7, and Alex Pretti, also 37, who was killed on Saturday.

The resulting rhetoric around the attack on Omar, including the doubts over whether it was real, illustrates how violent incidents targeting public officials can be swiftly repurposed into political narratives.

Omar was not injured and continued with her remarks once the man had been subdued, saying: "Here's the reality that people like this ugly man don't understand; we are Minnesota strong and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us.”

Several MAGA figures have cast doubts over whether the attack was genuine, including conservative influencer Laura Loomer, who posted on X: “This is the most staged thing I have ever seen in my life. I’m calling for an immediate investigation into whether Ilhan Omar staged the spraying of her body at her Townhall tonight to distract from new reports over her marriage fraud and accumulation of $30 million worth of wealth on a $180,000 per year salary.

“There must be an investigation into this known fraudster. This looks very staged, and I would not be surprised if Ilhan set this up herself so she could cry victim as President Trump is exposing her and as Congress and the DOJ [Department of Justice] are investigating her and her husband.”

Conservative social media commentator Zeek Arkham said in a post on X: “I’m not saying the incident with Ilhan Omar was staged, but a sitting congresswoman is at an event where an unknown man gets up and sprays an unknown liquid on her.

“She then bravely runs towards him, without reflexive safety reaction as most people would do, to tune him up as her security gets there, without concern for her own safety.

“Then, instead of taking her to a hospital to get checked out regarding this unknown liquid, she continues her speech as if nothing happened. Totally, totally wasn’t staged.”

Political commentator David J. Freeman said in a post on X: “Why would I not think the Ilhan Omar incident was staged…? EVERYTHING THE LEFT DOES IS FAKE AND STAGED.”

ABC News senior political correspondent Rachel Scott spoke to the president by phone on Tuesday evening, and Trump said he hadn't seen a video of the incident.

"I don't think about her. I think she's a fraud," he was reported as saying. "She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her."
