Fears rise after mysterious people seen entering NYC manholes
Clips of mystery groups climbing out of manholes in Brooklyn has frightened locals on social media, despite police officials emphasizing that there is no threat to the public.
The people seen leaving the city's sewer systems have yet to be identified, leaving many to come up with their own theories on what they could be doing in the tunnels.
Users flooded the comments under the bizarre video footage posted across the Internet, many expressing concern over the separate incidents.
"That is truly terrifying," wrote one X user on the clips.
"It is a little scary that July 4th is right around the corner and there is going to be a huge celebration all over the country especially in NYC," another person commented on Reddit.
One Reddit user posted on a local subreddit: "Anyone else getting a little nervous about the people going in the manholes?"
A law enforcement official said that the NYPD's main theory is that the trespassers were looking for valuables, according to NBC New York.
"There is no threat to public safety at this time," a NYPD spokesperson said.
"The investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD’s Intelligence Division."

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
