This actually reminds me of an old tradition that is probably still alive in parts of Europe, which is that every town and village was dedicated to some saint, and once a year, they had festivities on that saint's day.
Now in the US you have the same thing but with aliens. Many towns have these celebrations once a year when they commemorate the supposed alien encounter. Which is of course better because it doesn't segregate members of non Christian religion.
