The same way that life formed, because it just did. I don't believe there is an afterlife for the same reason that I don't believe in god, but just as it is possible to believe in god without believing in unicorns it is possible to believe in an afterlife without believing in god.
I can't argue with the logic Rhizo but when you look at what little we know about consciousness it strikes me as even less likely to find a way to keep it going outside the living body than it does to eventually discover some minor little god living under a bridge somewhere. Well it's kind of tough to compare virtual zero with virtual zero but as your say, to each his own. Personally I intend to enjoy a very nice afterlife as compost in my garden. I hope to make it into some trees and some milkweed so that a monarch butterfly will take me into its tissues and take me aerial.

And I do not fear my own death. In a way I do, we all do a little, but I am not terrified at the notion like I was a few years ago. I know I will be at peace and I do not want to fear something everyone seems to be so taboo on. Something that's going to happen to each and every one of us eventually. I'm trying to research and watch things to make me less afraid of death. It's just something I really do not want to fear. I'm making some progress but hopefully I'll get there some day.
