The same way that life formed, because it just did. I don't believe there is an afterlife for the same reason that I don't believe in god, but just as it is possible to believe in god without believing in unicorns it is possible to believe in an afterlife without believing in god.
I can't argue with the logic Rhizo but when you look at what little we know about consciousness it strikes me as even less likely to find a way to keep it going outside the living body than it does to eventually discover some minor little god living under a bridge somewhere. Well it's kind of tough to compare virtual zero with virtual zero but as your say, to each his own. Personally I intend to enjoy a very nice afterlife as compost in my garden. I hope to make it into some trees and some milkweed so that a monarch butterfly will take me into its tissues and take me aerial.
An afterlife is no afterlife without your self and consciousness.
This is what I expect from an afterlife, even if I'd have to spend an eternity in hell.
Certainly would not object to that.
