My wife was just verbally accosted the other week when she was at the grocery. She was on her cell phone speaking to one of the organizers of our local atheist group. We were hosting a party for other free thinkers and she was going over some of the details. Her end of the conversation included the word "atheist group" which the eavesdropping fundy behind her overheard. He just jumped into the conversation he was only hearing half of, one which didn't involve him at all and wasn't any of his business, and started calling her all sorts of names and telling her that she was the reasons for all the problems in this country. I'm glad I wasn't there. I might have ended up going to jail.
This is why it's difficult to avoid "offending" these people, even if we decided that was important for some reason. Just by the fact that we exist can provoke them to such rage. Just the fact that we have a forum can incite them to enter and preach and condemn.
