Well, finally, 4 months into this saga, some good news.
Got the results of the ultrasound from the doc today - the left leg is shows no sign of clotting, and the thrombosis in the right is diminished, and no longer occlusive. Thanks to four months of high-dosage treatment with Warfarin (rat poison, eeek!), it looks like this thing is not going to kill me after all - at least not for a long time.
The diagnosis of APS (antiphospholipid syndrome) was confirmed, so I'll be on anticoagulants long-term, but that beats the hell out of the alternative.
