Perhaps I should have been more precise. I was referring to spiritual beliefs,including theism,unconnected to any organisation.. I really don't care about the personal beliefs and superstitions of any given individual as long as he doesn't insist I share them.
I have only contempt for organised religions,with their hierarchy, priestcraft and obscene wealth. My observation is that once believers organise into an organisation a lot of nasty changes take place. A high moral code is replaced by a divisive dogma ,and a focus on power,wealth and social control.
I Guess I need not elaborate to an Irishman history of The Church in Ireland,the damage it's done and continues to do to Irish society. The lunacy of the recent blasphemy laws are very mild indeed ,in comparison.
OH,I'm an Aussie by birth but Irish by ethnicity: My dad's people came from Clare to south Australia in 1870. Mum's lot left Galway for Canada during The Hunger. Yes,I've been,twice,(have even kissed the Blarney stone; nearly shat meself) Last time was in 2000,I went backpacking,starting in Rosslare. Had a ball
