I think you hit the nail on the head. We live in a society that respects poisonous professions like theologian and reviles harmless ones like the ones Summerqueen mentioned. It should be the other way around.
Priests are the ones who shouldn't be allowed in "polite society". "I'm sorry, sir, but this is a respectable function and you'll have to go ply your trade elsewhere."
The accusation of being *gasp* a priest should be one of libel. "How dare you insult my honor by suggesting that I was once a priest?! Someone get me the name of a good lawyer!"
Politicians seen in the company of priests should be pressured to resign, being morally unfit for office. "...and I have photographs of you in a car with a priest, Senator." "Are you blackmailing me?"
