Ya know it's funny, I volunteer with a group that meets in a church. Right inside the door is a 6 foot high freestanding wooden cross that is fixed to a movable base. It's at the right height for a coat rack and it's in the right place. I have to remind myself it's a religious icon and resist the urge to hang my coat on it because doing that would offend people. I haven't been an atheist that long but perhaps I'm getting the hang of things. Some people revere the crucifixion so much they wish to experience it themselves. Others have to resist using the cross as a coat rack.
Ugh! I just realized that I spelled the word crucifixion as "crucifiction" (I've since gone back and changed this). Perhaps I'll make a good atheist after all.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
