They aren't just standing up for atheism. They are standing for the right to freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Christianity has a direct effect on the laws in the US. If we know anything about the bible it is that it is full of bad unethical things. If you have one foot in the door with the bible it wouldn't be too much of a stretched to see the twisted values added to law.
