"I actually thought that catholic schools were church funded. It's pretty outrageous that the government is funding religious schools."
More info on that, 22% of primary schools in England and Wales (mostly Catholic but a few Muslim/Hindu/Jewish ) are state aided. This means the church provides the land to build the school, and 10% of the build cost - the rest being paid by the state. Of course if the school already exists, e.g. if it is an independent school entering the state sector, then there is no need even for the initial 10% build cost. Any further capital projects, like an extension , or new gym, are funded in the same way. The governing trust (ie the church) then owns the building and the running costs of the school are provided 100% by the local authority, whilst the governing trust retains control over admissions policy and school ethos (I think you can guess what that means !!).
Most Church of England schools are "voluntary funded" meaning that the local authority pays for everything but has more control over the school.
