This is an interesting topic. I have contemplated similar things as well. I have noticed reactions and attitudes like that, and greatly in America. I was born and raised in America, but I have a deep interest in genealogy - or perhaps obsession - and I have come acrossed a good few people here in America, that have reacted oddly to my research; often commenting on how we are American, not something else. In terms of true origin, only the Native Americans are from here, if they want to get technical. I am English, Scots-Irish, French, German, and small traces of Dutch, Welsh, Norman (Norwegian) and Mohawk Native American. This is all important to me, but some people tend to want to disregard heritage and/or ancestry and grasp tightly onto what ever community and civilization they are in; they want to "fit", I suppose. It is quite interesting to observe.
