if you were local to me, i'd surely give you a play. everyone around here complains about a lack of work and it's simply not true. people just think they're worth more than they are (not harshly, but it's true). if you come to me and start complaining that you're not making enough, i say you're making *your wage* more than 0.
i'm a general contractor and could always use a person who isn't scared to get dirty, even more so if you actually know something like how to pound a nail, read a tape measure, use a power tool. you'd be amazed at how many of my contractor buddies have the same need.
wherever you are, i'd suggest walking up to a construction site, asking who the boss is and offering your services to do anything and let them know you're not against grunt work. you'd be amazed at how fast they'd take you, even if for sweeping up or organizing tools. that stuff's invaluable on a site.
