When it comes to arguing from the biblical text (or studying or teaching) I most frequently use the New English Translation (NET) from Biblical Studies Press, which comes with over 63,000 translators notes. It is one of the most widely respected Bible translations; according to Wayne Grudem, in producing the English Standard Version (ESV) they drew extensively from the translators notes of the NET.
When it comes to simply reading the Bible for enjoyment sake, I use the New Living Translation (NLT), which is highly readable yet retains decent accuracy.
The NET is available in its entirety as a free download or online web use at http://www.netbible.org.
