Yup, here you can't buy beer from a Deli or any booze from a supermarket either.
In this state, until the early 70's we had 6 O'clock closing of all liquor outlets,plus from 11 am Saturday until 11am Monday.
The reasoning was that the working man was so lacking in self control that if the pubs did not close early, he would get too drunk to go to work the next day. I kid you not.
This led to the widespread illegal 'sly grog shops' run by criminal elements*.
