I think the problem with using the free will excuse for why god allows evil, is simply because there is no biblical support of free will. Paul says that God will have mercy on who he has mercy on and hardens who he will harden, to explain why the Jews didn't believe that Jesus is Christ. Their excuse is that God FORCED people to believe what they will believe like God FORCED Pharaoh to refuse letting the Israelites go despite the destruction happening to his country. Free will is a modern Christian myth.
