Annoying conversation.. "But you're such a good person!"

So I was eating lunch with people yesterday, and one of them wanted to see my future by reading my palm. I thought it was cool so I let him, and he asked me if I was religious or believed in any god and I said no. Later that day, my friend that was also there started to ask me about it. She said something like, "I noticed he was reading your palm and you said you didn't believe in god. Why?" I said, "Because I don't.." Then she started going all "he gave you life, you breathe because of him, etc.." Then I told her I didn't believe in that and then she said, "Why did you deny him? You know, the bible says that that if you deny the lord in front of your friends, you will be denied to his face." Then I said, "Well, I don't believe that either.." She told me that she was shocked because I was such a nice person but didn't believe in god. I pointed out to her that you can be a good person and still not believe in god or be religious and it was just annoying.. I can't stand when people do that!

I wouldn't spend too much time faulting your friend. A lot of people mistakenly attribute things to people on the basis of feeling. Long-life and maturity generally cure people of this kind of ill eventually. I wouldn't have started quoting scripture to someone who had no respect for its content. It would seem counter-productive and very much a dead end to me. I would have been more interested to find out how you'd come to the conclusions you have. In that way, I could evaluate whether your disbelief had any merit or whether it was merely the product of rebellion or otherwise a will set against an affirmative and appropriate belief in or acknowledgment of He who is ultimately responsible for your existence.
