An atheist by my understanding is a person who denies the existence of a supernatural deity.
An agnostic is someone who holds that ultimate knowledge of the existence of gods is impossible (in other words, nobody can ever know if they exist or not). Atheism and agnosticism are not mutually exclusive, because they both deal with different things (atheism with belief, agnosticism with knowledge). Many atheists are agnostic (including myself), as well as some of the more honest theists
