I think your project does have its merits, and might be worth pursuing.
You might want to check out kickstarter.com as a possibility for funding. I could even see a documentary being made of your exploits being a viable project.
Well I closed the project, some people thought it was a good idea but it didn't really excite anyone at all. Perhaps one day I will have the money to fund it myself.
