I find that horrendous but not surprising from what I've heard about the US system.
That scenario simply could not happen in Australia; the hospital could not cancel such a surgery,which would have been covered under our universal health scheme.Nor could the guy lose his private insurance in that situation. Nor is there an upper limit to any costs to a private insurer.
Here private health insurers are fully regulated by law.
