That's why I advised him to ask his mom how she felt about atheists in general first along with possibly waiting until he would not be in a situation where they could screw him over badly. Do not make the presumption that I would have him just hide away and never say it at all, hell knows I'd like this world to be one where atheists can be open about being atheistic without fear of reprisal but sadly we just do not live in such a world yet. Atheist teenagers especially have it rough since they're more or less stuck with their parents for a determinate amount of time.
