Think of it this way: How about any other fictional book you've read? Sure, they can reflect the state of society, the author can mention real events that have indeed happen in the past, but at the end of the day it's just a fairy-tale. And wouldn't you too find it highly inaccurate to quote e.g. Jane Austen as a historic document (and she uses a lot less of the fantasy element than the bible)?
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human.
