Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him
1 John 2:15.
There is several reasons why I like this verse.
1) It's anti-materialistic, while today the west is very much in love with the world and the pleasures of the world. This shows the extent people actually care about following the Bible other then stating Jesus is their savior. It's also seems to be the case that the right wing are the more religious while at the same time, the more anti-socialist, giving a lot of weight to free-hand of "love of the world".
2) This verse when combined with verses of those whom believe in the son being saved out of love of the light they have, as well as verses stating those whom don't obey God's commands (including this one to love of the world and the things in the world), shows a contradiction. But it shows the extent of cherry picking. Christians cherry pick the verses stating whomever believes in the son will be granted love of the father and be given eternal life, but ignore the verses that talk about the necessity of keeping up the commands of God or the necessity of not loving the world and the things in the world?
3) What is the world? You see the world is obviously filled with both good and bad stuff, with things that honor you and things that disgrace you, and yet it's described that shouldn't be loved. Then people have to redefine the word 'world' to mean only certain things, while not other things, but the world always meant either earth and all that it's in it, or the universe and all that is in it, but it never meant only "fleshly" desires or anything like that.
4) Most people love life, love fleshly desires like good food, nice house, sex, etc, but still love God. This verse therefore is describing a false reality. This is true of Christians and Muslims.
5) This shows how movies, commercials,, music the marketing world, is overcoming the influence of the bible in the west. Hardly anyone knows that you aren't allowed to love the world or anything it, your suppose to be without attachment to it. People are taught to have severe love of the world and the things in it through TV, school, society, music, etc...the teachings of the bible are fading away in society more and more.
I like the verse basically, because, this shows ALOT about western society and Christianity in particular.
