I liked the Abram's film and am looking forward to the next one. I'm one of the few that really enjoyed what was done with the characters, particularly Scotty and Uhura. I don't get the canonical bullshit (same applies to Whovians).

I liked the Abram's film as well, but nowhere near as much as I liked the originals of the Star Trek series. In the Abrams version, future older Spock explains the discrepancies to the young James Kirk that there were alternate events. Old Spock explained that in his alternate time, James Kirk's father lived to see him become Captain of the Enterprise and Vulcan wasn't destroyed. The two best of the Star Trek movies by far were the 'Wrath of Khan' and the 'Search for Spock'. All in all, I liked the Abram's version okay, (although I thought the bald tattooed Romulans wearing long black dusters was a bit cheesy and unoriginal). But I definitely liked it better than the 'New Generations' crap. Captain Kirk would kick Picard's ass any day!

WTF was the deal with the whole Spock/Uhura matchup? That doesn't really fit the Vulcan nature, given what we learned about them from that Pan-Fahr episode.

If a black hole consumed Vulcan, wouldn't that pretty much destroy live on the nearby world where Spock was planted to watch?

And Scotty just so happened to be coincidentally stationed on the same nearby planet ...doing what again?

And if you could create a black hole, why would it be necessary to have this great big laser drill to first dig a hole to the center of the planet Vulcan? You could just create the black hole on the planet surface and it will naturally fall to the planet core. Oh, but then there'd be no dramatic fight scene for Kirk.

Another oversight in the Abram's version is Chekhov. He wasn't part of the original crew until later on and he certainly wasn't around when Christopher Pike was the Captain of the 'Enterprise'.
