As for the cigar analogy, does it have to be either some arcane multi-layered deep mystery or totally insignificant randomness? Couldn't it be that jonb thinks it looks cool or something?

Well you're certainly taking the fun out of this, but to answer your question, I think avatar choices say something about the person, especially when they have been constructed from a variety of sources.

Why did you choose your own avatar? Because you wanted to use that picture, or some impenetrable universal mystery?

I identify with the character Walter from The Big Lebowski, that's why. If you know the character then you know something about me. What I want to know is what does Jon's avatar say about him? Since he's kudoing every post in this thread I think he's enjoying it as well, which was partly my purpose. If you don't want to take part, feel free to ignore it.
