I know of someone who had almost exactly that happen to them. He was an extremely fundy creationist who posted over at the now-extinct Connecticut Valley Atheists Forum (CVA). As time and discussions went on, his faith gradually evaporated until he cast off the shackles and 'crossed the floor' as a fellow atheist (incidentally, he's doing very well). Anyway, he dithered for a long time about coming out to his family, but eventually "screwed his courage to the sticking place" and opened up to his parents. To his astonishment, his mum's reaction to the revelation that her son is now an atheist was something like "Is that all? I thought you were going to tell us you're gay like your brother."
