I hate to contradict my favorite forum cunt but why can't our newest member have a belief in no higher power if she wants? Gnostic atheists do exist. They're just a hell of a lot rarer (as a % of all atheists) than gnostic atheists. Few theists are very discerning about what they have good reason to believe when it comes to religious matters. Most atheists on the other hand will happily concede agnosticism but then also embrace defacto atheism. The effort required to maintain unwarranted beliefs seems to interfere too much with a person's cognitive equilibrium to allow them to concede agnosticism. But agnostic theists too do exist and I especially enjoy chatting with them.

My impression is that Southern Cal if rampant with churchy folks. My younger brother is one of them. Glad for you that you could escape.
