A common experience of a transperson might go somewhat like this (let's use a man for an example, and PLEASE NOTE: this is only one storybook example, every transperson is different), is that he feels left out and emasculated when all the men are picked for a team game and he's standing there with the women, getting picked towards the end. He must constantly endure the societal expectations and treatment of women now directed upon him, and naturally: he rejects this, as he is not a woman. He wants to wear the tux to his wedding, and he endures a torrent of 'she', 'her', 'sis', 'girl', and 'Lydia' every day of his life, feeling put down every time he hears it, and maybe even guilty that he isn't the girl everyone wants him to be.

He is forced to visit the women's restrooms every time he has to piss... an endlessly embarrassing act for him, and he may even wait until there's nobody inside to do so. As to the act itself, he feels shame and disgust as he wipes the vagina clear of any residue, feeling pathetic squatting just to piss. Yes, he definitely has penis envy... for almost every time he's in the mood he wants to fuck the other person, wants his cock sucked, and this is almost the only way he can 'get off'; an event he usually feels some level of self-disgust for. And once periods start? He broods, he bitches, he whines: he is angry. If he's religious, he might be cursing his god(s)... and maybe resenting his mother('s DNA). Maybe he'll commit suicide, he'll certainly think about it. And he utterly despises his breasts and everything about them, going so far as to bind them tightly and painfully to his chest. His lack of facial/body hair might annoy him, and his feminine frame irritates him sometimes. When he looks in a mirror, he winces in pain and bitterness.

One day, he meets someone whose transdar (think gaydar) goes off. They point him in the direction of a therapist who worked for them, and he starts on testosterone. Suddenly, everything is better. He feels more energetic, he witnesses his appearance change over time and becomes excited by it, he even burns off a great deal of fat that he'd built up in his former misery. He still isn't completely satisfied, but suicide isn't even close to the forefront of his mind anymore: everything is working out. He gains muscle mass, starts seeing a handsomer (if still slightly effeminate) man in the mirror. His shoulders broaden, and he starts getting body hair and facial hair, and this is a wonderful change for him.

Eventually, he starts to consistently 'pass' as a man. Getting sir'd for the first time makes all of his work feel worthwhile. The 'she's and 'her's and 'Lydia's become replaced with 'he's and 'his's and 'Max's, he can enter the mens mostly without fear of being 'clocked' (the opposite of passing), he is among the first picked for sports now (he works out), and he even meets a lovely man or woman (or whatever) and has a fulfilling relationship for the first time in his life: one where he's treated as the man of the house, where he is a father figure, and where nobody doubts in his manhood for even a second. Lives happily ever after.
