As Cap said, they could have believed in thousands of fucking gods, but they didn't believe in the right one, and so the letter sent home states "no concept of god" the assumption and unspoken portion of course "no concept of the only real god - the correct one". The vast majority of native tribes were described as being "godless". We know, of course, that this was not the case. More accurately they were "christ-less", and at least in this, they were far more advanced than their european conquerors.....
