What a great lesson. Can you imagine the aftermath of the parents and grandparents who had to go to this massive field of slaughter and pick up the bodies of the dead and wounded? You think Elisha ever went back to that town? Hmmm, I think not. Can you imagine the new found "love" the parents and townspeople felt for their almighty creator? No? Me neither.

I don't think "love" was what God was going for in that killing field. Prophets are men of final chances or of deleverance. Elijah and Elisha were the last chance versions. Those kids and the parents of those kids had already exceeded their quota of God's love under that covenant.
Their deaths while personally tragic helped wake up an entire nation of people to the understanding or purpose that Elisha was their. This event is what put Elisha on par with Elijah wha had been taken up by God. Tey knew that their would be no gaps between the last prophet of God and the comming one.
