You can say that's not a good enough excuse for Islam if you like, but personally I think it is.
I hear what you are saying and I am sure that the majority of muslims are not intolerant superstitious arseholes.
However there is a large contingent of muslims who use Islam to oppress women and people of other faiths as much as their power allows.
Look at almost any Islamic country and you will see oppression and harsh interpretations of the Koran and Sharia.
You can say "its the culture" or "its not in the Koran" but the fact is that Islamic countries have these backwards views and actions which seem to be backed bu Hadiths, Imams or by the woolly language of the Koran which seems it can be interpreted anyway someone with an agenda likes.
I agree with almost all of what you're saying. However, I don't agree that the Qu'ran uses woolly language, it's as clear as many ancient books. Please remember that we see the Qu'ran after it has been translated and understood into modern language. This can often lead to things sounding differently to how they were understood soon after it was revealed (or written in a non-Muslim's opinion). The same goes for the Hadiths. Also when chapters of the Qu'ran are read in their entirety the context often becomes very different to how people make it sound. I do however agree that some Imams, particularly in said countries, are guilty of doing exactly this.
