And best of all, Joss Whedon is one of us. By this I mean he is both a geek and an atheist.
What's your favorite Joss Whedon project? And if you don't know who Joss Whedon is, look him the fuck up now.
Whedon (along with other visually strong directors like Guillermo Del Toro) is heavily influenced by Terry Gilliam (did you spot the direct reference to Gilliam's 'Brazil' in Cabin in the Woods?).
It's shocking to me that more people do not recognise Gilliam's influence on mordern media (I've lost count of how many Gilliam references are crammed into Buffy) but to use Del Toro's words 'we are squandering him foolishly with every film of his that remains unmade.'
Whedon is good at times, I accept that, but when compared with the unbound imagination of Terry Gilliam he comes off as derivative and repetative, trust me, this is not a put down of Whedon but a measure of Gilliam's genius.
Seriously, try a Terry Gilliam film, your mind will love you forever...
Recommended TG films...
Brazil (probably the most underrated film of all time in terms of its influence on other directors/writers)
The Fisher King
Time Bandits
12 Monkeys
Tideland

A valuable opinion indeed, and I concur most readily with your statement regarding the under-ratedness of Brazil. I feel both Whedon and Gilliam are masterful auteurs.
