Interesting that support for your statement comes from the Catholic Encyclopedia which notes: Docetism is not properly a Christian heresy at all, as it did not arise in the Church from the misunderstanding of a dogma by the faithful, but rather came from without.

It is true that the Orthodox gained power in the 4th century went about suppressing their rivals. However I might add they were the the majority faction in the church by Constantine's reign. Constantine being a politician decided to favor that faction of Christianity which had apparently the majority of the faithful. Although the Gnostics were not as organised as the Orthodox were and Gnostics were often part of Orthodox congregations and met in "Gnostic" groups inside those congregations.
