Many people have a civil good that we respect because we see the benefit to themselves and others. Some forms of good are meritorious while others are not. True good comes from love of the Lord and love of neighbor as self. Good that is only civil is motivated by self interest, reputation, and mutual gain which are not spiritual motives. From my experience, believers in real life tend to give people they do not know intimately the benefit of the doubt with regards to their motives.
