My father has a crucifix on one of his walls and it is not to 'ward of evil' but rather to focus thoughts on Christ. He was a Jesuit brother briefly (thank goodness it was brief or I might not have been born) so still retains some Catholic practices. I remember when I was about 14 and wore my CND badge proudly. I also wore a badge with a beautiful picture of the Queen Mother when it was her 80th birthday. Many 'older' people would sweetly gaze at her picture until they saw the words '80 years...a scrounger'. I think us humans like to display things that make a statement about important things to us. Crosses are part of that.
