See, I did some "aftermarket" to my little family heirloom. I did this without reservation because the thing didn;t stick with our family because it was pretty or had historical value, it stuck because it was useful. I ditched the pan and it uses caps now. I don't go much on the cartridges (but i do have spent and hinged rifle cartridges that I use to measure the charge. Sights mounted, nice new stock with some absorption on it. Mostly use small bits of cotton for wadding, and the balls are hollow backed cones (that allow the slightly smaller ball to expand into the newly rifled barrel). I have a breech loading black powder that's much more reliable (and much faster) but it toes the line.
I suppose it would be fun to try my hand at some really vintage stuff, but I don't do much target shooting with anything but my .22. The rest are for hunting, and since I'm an ambush kind of guy (that doesn't fire at moving game with rifles) I get one shot, usually from a range where I can see their pupils dilate, and that's the end of it for me.
