The Roman method of crucifixion was a slow agonizing death, renowned for its utter brutality, it was the most feared form of execution, and the graphic spectacle served as a deterrant , upon being nailed to the cross { one in each wrist, just below the thumb and one through the foot and then the fourth through both feet} the condemned man would be hoisted aloft to die, as he weakend and his muscles stretched in his arms and back, sending shock waves of pain, he would slump and not be able to draw breath, so he would have to push up on his heel { the one being naild directly to his cross Genesis 3:15 ...,and thou shalt bruise his heel. } you see crucifixion was a death of slow suffocation of immense pain, when the condemned mans legs failed, after his arms had popped out from their sockets, he would finally die, this was known to take from 3 to 7 days . When Jesus and the two thieves were crucified it was on a friday and as the sabbath was due come sundown the priests did not want them to defile it ,so they got the Romans to break their legs to speed up the process, but when the guard came to Jesus he did not need to, as Jesus haveing fulfilled the prophecys of His death, gave up His life to His Father. Add to this prior to this brutal death, Jesus was scourged so all His ribs would have bean exposed and his flesh would have hung from Him like ribbons .
