The Romans did not invent crucifixion. They learned it from the Carthaginians during the Punic Wars of the 3d century BC. Carthage, being a Phoenician colony founded in the late 9th century BC most likely brought the practice along with them from the ANE.
P.S. - If the gospel bullshit stories were to be believed then it was those same priests who not only brought "jesus" to the Romans to be crucified they were the ones who insisted that it be done at once. For them to then go and say "hey, what about our fucking sabbath!" would have probably gotten them a boot in the ass from whatever Roman was there.
