There are plenty of atheists who are neither nihilists nor rationalists.

Tell me more. It seems to me that you either believe in a reality that acts according reason or you do not.

I suppose, but atheism isn't the word for believing in a reality that acts according to reason. You can't divide different categories along the same lines.

There's nothing inconsistent with being an atheist and believing in (say) ESP, although a rationalist would be hard-put to justify having such a belief. There's also nothing inconsistent with being an atheist while being a Buddhist, Jain, Taoist, Raellian, Jedi, etc.
