It would be silly to blame Islam if the perpetrators weren't Muslims, wouldn't it?
Democracy isn't perfect, it can lead to bad outcomes. As the saying goes, democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. You can certainly point to weaknesses in the democratic process that enabled Hitler or put warmongers in control of the US military.

He was probably so far off-base about what Islam is really about that it was like a revelation to learn that a lot he blamed on the religion had more to do with political and tribal folly coated with a veneer of religious justification.
